Do I Need to Send an After Interview Thank You Letter?

Yes! The importance of thank you letters is often overlooked by many job seekers. Always send one to each interviewer as soon as possible following your interview. Also called a follow-up letter, it may be the deciding factor in your favor, especially when there are other applicants with similar qualifications to you. Whether you are seeking a white collar or blue collar job, an administrative position, a technical position, or a general laborer position, following up the interview with a well written thank you letter could be the key to getting the job offer.

Thank you letters should be mailed but under certain circumstances it may be acceptable to email your letter. If an employer gives you an email address to correspond, it would be acceptable to send the follow-up letter electronically. If not, don't research to locate an email address. Instead, send your letter the old fashon way, via the United States Postal Service.

Although employers expect to receive thank you letters from the people they interview, you can use the letter as an effective job seeking tool. Some benefits include:

  • Shows you are courteous, knowledgeable, and professional.
  • Demonstrates your written communication skills.
  • Helps to make you stand out in the mind of the interviewer.
  • Gives you an edge over the other candidates who did not bother to send a letter.
  • Allows an opportunity to mention important things you forgot to say during the interview.
  • Keeps the lines of communication open between you and the employer.
  • Reinforces your interest in the job position.
